Ajax - what does this mean for the publisher?
Ajax - what does this mean for the publisher?
I finally got round to installing and playing around with vbulletin 3.5.0 yesterday and I must say I was very impressed with how well the new ajax features work within the script… but it got me thinking…
Now ajax is becoming so popular and is starting to become more and more mainstream, what effect will this have on the people who sell CPM banner spots on there website?
With the new version of vbulletin when you make a post the page isn’t reloaded, the new post just appears on the page automatically. The same happens when you hit the edit button.
Here are a few rough figures to give you a rough idea of what I mean…
Forum x gets 10,000 new posts per day and 500 post edits.
For the sake of argument lets ignore all the impressions on the other pages and stick to the impressions on the threadview page. With the current non-ajax versions of vbulletin that is roughly 21,000 page impressions. The new ajaxed up version of vbulletin that would only be 15,000 page impressions.
Let’s say you get an average of $1cpm. You have already lost $6.
$6 a day x 365 = $2190 revenue loss per year.
I have used vbulletin as an example but it could be applied to anything really. I am not really asking a question in this thread, I just thought it would make an interesting topic of conversation.
Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
