Default Role of Ethnicity in changing web development waves

Study Gauges TV, Computer Usage by Ethnicity
    October 04, 2005
    By John Consoli

Black households have more televisions and larger sets compared to white and Hispanic households, according to a new study by Knowledge Networks. The study also shows that television plays "a more important social role" among both black and Hispanic households than it does among white households.

Conversely, the data shows that white households own more personal computers and more pay for high-speed Internet connectivity than do black or Hispanic households.

In the new study, 62 percent of black households were found to have more than two televisions, compared to nearly 51 percent among whites and 44 percent among Hispanics. Roughly half (49 percent) of black homes have televisions with screens 30 inches or bigger, versus 44 percent for whites and 41 percent for Hispanics.

The study also showed that 57 percent of black and Hispanic households state that watching television is the household's favorite way to relax, compared to just under 53 percent for white households. However, 45 percent of black respondents and 50 percent of Hispanic households said that "much" of their family time is spent watching television, compared to 29 percent for white households.

The study also found that 70 percent of white homes have a computer, compared to 55 percent for black homes and 47 percent for Hispanics. Thirty percent of white homes have high-speed interconnectivity, compared to 19 percent for black homes and 16 percent for Hispanic homes.

"Each household's choice of how to spend its budget for entertainment and education impacts how and whether marketers will be able to reach that household," said David C. Tice, vp, Knowledge Networks/SRI. "And deeper understanding of ownership and usage points toward opportunities for reaching these important groups more effectively."

this being the case, does that elevate or suspend domains aimed at these demo groups?
does that mean more tv themed or entertainment sites can succeed better than other topics sites names pointed at these usegroups?
or that the market for names for black and hispanics and latin and spanish is the next big boom?
