I emailed the people at WebSite.ws about their prices for 3, 2, and 1 character domains. This was their reply:

Good Afternoon,

We have no future plans to change the prices of our domain names.

Kindest Regards,

Hmm... Maybe they expect this extension to be very popular? Or it could be very new and the prices are usually very high at first.

it's really going to bite them in the a** if people stop running and they find themselves sitting on a bunch of bitter prospective clients and a business model that asks prices the market won't pay.

Yeah I don't understand. I think they would make more money if they lowered the prices of new domain extensions. The more people the better. Quantity beats out higher pricing sometimes.

Not if they have to service problematic registrars, pay for interfacing with drop catchers, pay extra staff. This way every domain sale pays for the trouble and labor.

-JJ-

Yeah usually you have to pay EXTRA for services. GoDaddy adds on so many extras after you purchase a domain, it's sickening, but a good way of advertising extra services.

No, JJ. not extra services. What I am saying is that instead of depending on volume to provide the operating income, this entity is depending on every domain to pay its way through a lifetime of customer service and processing at purchase, with no other services added.

Did you look at their site? Their whois sucks, it doesn't show hardly any info. How much labor or cost could be invovled with that? Plus, the guy at Domain Site said they have to pay Website.ws. It looks like they are just sucking everything they can get. There little bio says they believe it will be the next .com, but it's already been out for 3 years. I can't think of 1 .ws domain I go to (except Website.ws for looking up crap). They are neglecting the fact that more and more TLDs are coming out. EU, ES, XXX, and all the others are getting flooded with pre-registrations. US is gaining moementum. It seems like there are just too many other options to warrant a $50,000 registration fee.

Is .ws really going to be that popular? I mean it means website, but In my opinion it is just another extension. People will use it because .com, .net, and .org are all taken.

what's with the trailer trash girl with the tied up shirt? is that supposed to attract my business? This almost looks like a parking page! They certainly didn't go out of their way to make a special internet presence, did they? The whois looks amateurish and 1997 era html.
Have you read the "story"? it sounds like one of their kids wrote it for a third grade essay project. I especially like the photo of their "International headquarters" in Carlsbad. Good thing they noted the square footage of their building, i would have been up nights wondering.
But it's nice to see they had an ICANN advisor, the same type of advisor cynics argued as far back as 2000 were skewing the internal workings of ICANN to reject some $50,000 bids and award others. I wonder how GDI got the award? Sheer merit, of course.

It doesn't really mean website, but that's how they are trying to market it.

Mike and Alan were aware that in the mid 1990’s, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) assigned each nation a country code. These codes were designed to give each country an address to use for their own Internet needs. For instance, the United States was assigned .us, Australia .au, Ireland .ie. "We knew that a good, easy-to-remember country code could be marketable globally as a viable alternative to .com," said Alan. "And so," Mike added, "we ordered some pizza, locked ourselves in a room, and went through the entire list of countries to pinpoint the best possible code.”

They ultimately focused on the domain extension .WS -- which belongs to the tiny island nation of Samoa, deep in the South Pacific. “We thought that the abbreviation .WS could be successfully marketed worldwide as the ‘WebSite’ top-level domain,” said Mike.

well ws certainly doesn't say "Samoa" to me.

From 1900 to 1914 they Islands were called German Samoa. In 1914-1997, the name was Western Samoa. In 1990, the country codes were given out. That's why they are WS. In 1997, the name was changed to Independant State of Samoa.

Isn't that what someone said on this website earlier? I wasn't sure what it meant, it just came to my mind that .ws meant website. Kind of obvious ya think?

I naturally think Western Samoa, but that's probably because I was born and raised there most of my life.

How is it there? I would have never guessed Western Samoa. Unless they make an extension for every place on earth. They have .eu, .us, etc. I'd say it's 50\50 between website and Western Samoa. I personally think it is website. I looked on google and there are a lot of .ws = websites, etc.

Anyway to find out?

h.ws is $50,000 to register. You think it can be sold for $150,000+?

Definitely not worth registering, and I doubt you could get a profit selling it, .ws stinks :)

.ws, .be, they're all fairly new. Give them some time. They will be popular someday. Especially in there countries.

The question exactly how much time should they be given to be proven there worth? I think if mess.be was ever sold, people may reconsider, mess.be would go for a really high amount..

Well considering mess is an English word, I don't think it would go for that much. A Dutch or French word .be would be worth more. What's the Dutch or French word for mess? That one might be worth something.

It would go for that much, if you regularly visit mess.be, you would know it's the #1 MSN messenger resource on the world wide web ;) They've also been around for quite some time, and I'm sure they make alot through ads..

I didn't think .be has been around for a long time either. Mess.be is like any other .be only it's developed a little bit.
