why would someone want to register one domain with all of them extensions? and maybe more.

I was looking at the NYTIMES website and they have .com and .org and .net is not registered I think by nytimes.

Thank YOU!

Since NYTIMES.com is a business how come they have .org directed to their business website?

doesn't .org suppose to be a non-profit organization.

If I understand correctly... it's to prevent people from copying their site with the same name, different extension.

A great tool to check this kind of thing out is:
www.whois.sc
Type in a name, or words that might be in a name, and it'll give you all the possible registrations for that name, find out who has them registered, thumbnails and stats if they are active ... useful service, for sure.

There have been so many problems with copycats using the same name Registrars surely want to make extra money, but they also care about your wellbeing. :)

Another reason why people register .com|.net|.org is because they are basically the most common extensions out there, people also register .net|.org to get all the traffic they can possibly get, people do like to experiment and see what they can find at .net|.org ;)

yes but i would say largely unless there is a mammoth brand at stake the copyright laws protecting those products and brands serve to protect the "copycat' issues somwhat.

Yeah, forgot about that, they could also be used as a redirect to the main site.

Sometimes, people that register .com usually use .net|.org as some sort of resource or extension site where they will be adding extra content|features (hehe, for some reason I like using "|" instead of "," :D) take this for example:

Ben registers UltimaForum.com to use for his site where he will be giving details about his PHP forum software, download links and the typical..

Ben then registers UltimaForum.net|UltimaForum.org and uses UltimaForum.net as a modification/hack resource site for Ultima Forum, and UltimaForum.org as a style/theme/customization site for Ultima Forum.

There are many other reasons why people register .net|.org besides .com, but the reasons already posted are the main reasons.

I never thought of it that way... it'd be awesome to have a whole "network" of sites and have different parts of it at the .net/.org clones.

That's also possible, that's why registering .net|.org is very important for those people that actually care about their sites.
