Has anyone been in the market for the storm watch, hurricane type domain names? I would be interested to hear how that's going or what the strategy is.

What would these sites contain that isn't already listed on news sites?

I mean like emergency medical and survival instructions, first aid, local resources. Storm information keyed to an area that was not just news feed. I don't necessarily mean the scam sites.
Craigslist was very key in assisting internet donators of food and lodging, quicker then the govt it seems. Maybe if there was one emergency portal....like a hurricane watch but geared for what people should do, not geo maps with arrows and colors.
I registered HurricaneDonations.net. I was going to put links to all donation services but haven't yet.
Someone offered me a pretty penny for it but I can't take money for it. If I did I would donate it to the Red Cross.
I guess I could also donate the name itself to the Red Cross too right?

i would say, accept the money, donate a portion toward red cross. How do you declare domain name sales profit on your taxes? You're still in high school, right? Do you still file exempt even with this income? Did you know the first time you file for student aid they base it on what you made last year? That means you have to report this income.
Don't scam the IRS and the student aid commission. If you don't declare your domain sales earnings and you falsify your student loan applications, both your aid, loands, penalties can be revoked.
you can donate up to half your income for tax deductible if you itemise. Are you getting a scholarship based on need or basketbal? get some good tax advice now and don't screw up your future.
Of course its morally repugnant to allow or assist someone to make "dirty" money. Keep an eye on what they do with it, and if they are scammers, report them.

I like your idea Myst. I have a quick question. Is there a certain percentage to where you must report to the government or does all transactions made have to be reported? I guess an accountant would be good for larger transactions since Uncle Sam enjoys taking his part.
I still don't know what I am going to do with this name. I don't want to profit from it so maybe I will make it into a donation's site. Of course I can't accept donations unless I get a license or however they do it, but I can send people to links featuring donations.
There is a new Hurricane coming so this might be a hot topic, even hotter than before.

Hon, ALL transactions have to be. You don't get to select which transactions you'd care to report, unless you want to go to jail as a tax evader.
if they audit your paypal seven years from now, and find evildoing, unreported income, they can audit you, causing you to have to pay an attorney and court costs, pay the additional taxes, and fines for the years of interest plus.
this might cause your student loans to go into default if they can prove your information was not accurate concerning your income and that you were in arrears with the IRS or evading taxes.
Since you have to submit your latest tax return to get loan consolidation and deferments, this could lead to big trouble down thre line, not to mention barring you from some kinds of employment and other things due to background checks.

Yeah when it comes to the lottery though if it is below a certain amount the government doesn't take anything. That's why I was asking. :)

gambling winnings are not considered the same as sales proceeds and earnings. have you seen a tax lawyer?

Nope. I haven't seen a tax lawyer. I fill out a 1099 every year though for taxes.

1099 is fine. At least they see you are making an effort to report domains income. But if you are putting money into domains and getting investment value back, i would get some advice to avoid the scenarios sketched above.

Will do. I don't want to get in trouble now. :(

to steer this thread back to its original purpose:
the quandary is , how moral and ethical is it to make money off of traffic and developed domains that are fluctuating in value to extreme storm activity.

I think it's perfectly fine. Stores make money off suplies that storm victims need. *shrug*

KatrinaRelief.com/org might be a good one

That's a very good one. Wouldn't you rather have a more general one like HurricaneDonations? I picked up the .net because the others were taken. Not sure how well it goes with HurricaneDonations though. I think it is a great domain and can serve a great purpose to someone interested in actually doing something to help others out with it.

I was reading on time magazine that there are a lot of problems with decision making about how or whether even to rebuild new orleans and parts of Louisiana etc.
is there a citizen's forum online?

Not sure about the Citizen's Forum. I'm sure there is though. I know they would like to higher the elevation if they rebuild New Orleans. That wouldn't be an easy task though, so if they do decide to do that it would takes years on end.
