I found this site about half a year ago. Now they offer dot anything domains absolutly free! It's a great service. The only problem is that you have to install a plugin to view the domains. Good thing you can configure your server so that visitors don't have to. It's in the FAQ.

Yup, free dot anything domain names. For example, you can get www.domain.names

lol, you are required to install software on your computer to be able to view your domain and if you advertise your site which uses a domain from there, people who don't have that software installed will not be able to view your site or they will either be prompted to download it..
So it isn't really all that good..

Eh... that dosen't sound too good, you're right. I don't like installing software like that anyway

I tried going to Jesus.Christ and it couldn't be found. It didn't ask me to install anything.

What about .com 's?
donny

No, you can't register .com's. If you read the FAQ, it tells you that you can bypass the installing part by tweaking the server your domain name will be on. Thats the good part.

That's crazy. I might try it, though. If I point the domain to an existing domain, will they be asked to download something if they visit my page?

Yep, noone really likes to start their computer and find that they can't even get past the startup screens (the black ones) because of a corrupted registry.. that's happened to me once and it isn't pleasant I can tell you..

That's why you should always have a backup of the registery.

Same question. I'm looking to register some domain names but have them fowarded/pointed to an existing domain name on my server. Will the viewers when they go to my www.myname.whatever Will they be prompted to download some software just to view it?

people, if you're thankful for my post... what do you do? (read my sig *hint* *hint*)
lol
Sounds like a piece of spyware or such. This plugin is safe? I guess it can be useful if you register popular domains, but many people are too set with .com, etc.

That's what I thought. Besides, if it requires some plugin just to view, how many people do you honestly think will visit?

All well. At least it's free. The plugin makes you're 404 page into a dotworlds 404 page. I think that's all that it does other than make you see .anything domain names.

I am getting weird 404 traffic in one of my sites. The volume is up in a scary way. But the stats page says the browsers are plain vanilla. what gives?

That's actually no good. Other people without this software will not be able to reach your site anyway, since root dns servers are controlled by the USA government (?) and only they have access to them. (logical)

But if you install the plugin on your server, the people should be able to view them right?

If this plugin is for your dns server (which highly doubt, it's some IE / windows only plugin right?), then people using this server will be able to reach your site (in theory), other way - I believe not.

No its not for your DNS server, its for the server that hosts your sites.

Hm, I'm not sure what you mean by that (I'll have to check it out myself later). Often a DNS server is on the same server as your http / database servers.

Maybe often, but not usually.
