A Domain broker has the domain name that I want but there registration period is about up. If a domain name does not sale do they normally renew or let it go? So is paying for a back order worth it?

If they made enough money during that year to renew the domain they will.
Just use one of the backorder services where you only pay when they are successful, then you don't risk your money.
