.EU is being launched officially from the 7th of December. Now there are several questions surrounding this matter. I think everyone is wondering about the future of the TDL. I am speculating that .eu will be HUGE and might become the second most popular TDL after.com.
I think that individuals and companies that a domain registered in their country would want to see the same name with .eu at the end. Germany tld is the second most popular after .com. Imagine the .eu potential!!!
Of course this is just speculations, I would love to hear the opinion of more people on this, as I have invested a respectable amount of money on preregistrations of .eu domains.

I can see the .eu extension being big, but not as big as .com, or even .net.
I think it will end up being how the .info extension was, there was a massive surge of regestrations at the start (even though that was due to them being free), and then alot of them will end up dropping. Just IMO.

yes but .net is not the second largest. .DE is the second largest tld and it is a country belonging in EU. Based on this fact and on the fact that many EU tlds are in the top 10 largest, I will have to disagree with you. .info does not represent some specific community, especially this big as European union with 25 member states, with an estimated population of 460,270,935 for 2005 and 225,006,820 Internet users as of Sept/05. It would be rediculus to compare it with .info ........... What do the rest of you think about this?

well .eu will be big in europe. that stands to reason. but it can't overtake .com becasue its too big its a zamboni and .eu is the puck. are they projecting usage away from.coms to identical .eus? that is different feather bird....

Your question isn't clear to me, but anyway, who said that .eu will be bigger than .com? All i asked was the other members opinion on how successful they think .eu will be:) What i said is that it might get the second place after .com. This is just speculations based on real facts

It's really hard to judge being this early, but I've got my preregged domains! :)
Not sure if the .EU extension will be AS big in the USA or anywhere else other than Europe. Afterall any extension takes a while before it is known by everyone. Even the .com extension took a while before people just knew to type in .com after a web address. ;) .net is on the rise and is very popular now a days.

No extention will ever beat .com. It's so widely used, and so big these days, it's crazy. I never knew .de was second biggest. I always thought .net was the second. Never even heard of .DE.

I think it will be big. .com will Definitely remain the king, but I think .eu has serious potential. I think .us is fairly stupid, but other country code domains are kinda nice. For example, eBay.com is American, eBay.de is German. If you are in Germany, go to .de. It basically makes it easier to find the right site. I like knowing when the sites I go to (especailly if I plan on buying something) are from another country. I just bought something on eBay and it came from China, which I didn't know at the time I bought it.
If I go to a site and it's .co.uk, chances are I will look for another site to avoid international shipping charges. With Germany being the second biggest market (behind America), it's not surpising that their TLD is second. With all the other countries in the European Union, there is definitely a good market. I got my domains pre-registered.

Well .us is at a disadvantage because many American made websites are .com. Many European sites are going to be .eu since that is there main now. .us was made after .com was created.

I think it all depends on what businesses promote .eu. If walmart changed to .net it would still get the same traffic, and boost .net popularity. The more corperations embrass it the better it will be.
companies can not survive on .com forever.

Sure they can! .com is the king remember. Walmart.com will always be popular or at least as long as they stay in business.

I suppose, money talks.
I suppose, money talks.
Ain't that the truth. People say it doesn't buy happiness. Hmm... I don't know about that.

so maybe .eu will match the convergence of european economies and follow with a convergence of euro dotcoms. but I don't know if they are ready to conform and consolidate their internet ventures. Those might actually be country specific, so why have a france.eu and a france.com and a france.fr or whatever? That sounds confusing.

What is good about .fr or .us is you can add a town name than .us or .fr. Since it is the country itself. I was trying to register my hometown .us but it was taken. :( I think those will be very popular someday.
